How to Quickly Build Your Network

The idea of building up a supportive network from scratch is an intimidating one for many people. Around the NYSL Promotions office, networking strategies are common topics of conversation. Here are a few techniques we’ve honed for efficiently making valuable connections.

Research is the best first step toward a wide network of helpful connections. You have to understand the layout of your industry, especially when it comes to your region. By reading trade journals and other industry-specific sources, you should be able to get a feel for who might be valuable contacts for your unique goals.

Through the course of your research, you should make notes of potential connections and events at which you can meet them. From there, use LinkedIn to get familiar with these people’s achievements and any common ground you might share. We also tend to reach out to potential NYSL Promotions contacts through social media before meeting them in person.

Once you encounter someone you’d like to add to your network, it’s essential that you make the discussion more about him or her than yourself. The more insightful questions you ask, the better chance you have of finding shared interests that go beyond career goals.
